Serena Tinari
Investigative Journalist
I was raised in Rome and have been working as a journalist since 1994. Across the years, I worked for all kind of media - from print to radio, to TV and Internet. I often reported on human rights violations and controversial issues, and I ended up specializing at investigating medicine and public health. I moved from Italy to Switzerland in 2000 and from 2002 to 2015 I've been with the investigative unit of the Swiss public broadcaster. My documentary “Tamiflu, a Pandemic Business”, a collaborative project with NPR and CBC Radio Canada, was awarded a Daniel Pearl Award. In 2015 I founded with Catherine Riva "Re-Check - Investigating and Mapping Health Affairs", a non profit that works at the intersection of academic research and investigative journalism.
In 2016 I was awarded the Media Promotion Prize of the Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences, in 2021 the CICAP’s journalism award. A contributor with The BMJ’s investigative unit, I am a member of the coordinating panel of the Lown List of Industry-Independent Health Experts and a jury member with JournaFONDS. Together with Catherine Riva, I authored the Guide Investigating Health and Medicine of the Global Investigative Journalism Network (GIJN).
